A crystal chandelier turns a room into an occasion. It can be classic or surprisingly modern — it all depends on the shape, frame and size you choose.
Three main styles
- Classic: tiers of drops and pendants on a metal frame. For formal living and dining rooms, majlis and ballrooms.
- Cascade: long strands of crystal falling like rain. The best choice for stairwells and double-height halls.
- Modern: crystal rods, rings and geometric shapes on brass, gold or black frames. Sparkle without looking old-fashioned.
Choosing the size
Use the room formula: length + width in metres × 10 = diameter in centimetres. Over a dining table, choose half to two-thirds of the table width and hang it 75–90 cm above the top. Crystal reflects a lot of light, so a crystal chandelier can be slightly smaller than a fabric or metal one in the same room. For very tall rooms see villa chandeliers.
Frame finish
Gold and brass make crystal warm and luxurious. Chrome and nickel look cool and bright. Black frames with smoked crystal feel dramatic and contemporary.
How to clean crystal
- Switch off the power and let the bulbs cool.
- Dust regularly with a soft cloth or feather duster.
- Once or twice a year, wipe each crystal with a cloth slightly damp with water and a drop of glass cleaner, then dry it.
- Never spray liquid directly onto the chandelier or the sockets.
Installation tips
Large crystal chandeliers are usually hung on the frame first, and the crystals are attached afterwards. They are heavy — check the weight before buying and use a qualified electrician.
