Where to use wall sconces

Living room: pairs of sconces on both sides of a fireplace, mirror or sofa add soft, layered light. Bedroom: bedside wall lights free up the nightstand — see our bedroom wall lights. Hallway and stairs: a row of sconces guides the way and makes a long corridor feel wider. Bathroom: lights on both sides of the mirror give even light for the face; choose models rated for damp areas.

How high to mount a wall sconce

• Living rooms and hallways: about 150–170 cm from the floor to the centre of the light.
• Next to a bed: about 120–140 cm from the floor, or 30–40 cm above the mattress for reading.
• Beside a mirror: at eye level, about 160–170 cm, and 75–100 cm apart.
• In a corridor: one sconce every 2–3 metres.

Styles and finishes

Brass and gold sconces are warm and elegant — see modern brass lighting. Glass shades give soft, diffused light. Black metal looks graphic and modern. To make a room feel finished, match the wall lights with the chandelier or pendants in the same finish.

Hard-wired sconces should be installed by a qualified electrician. Ask us if the model you like can be made with a plug and cable.

Which bulbs should I use?

Warm white LED bulbs of 2700–3000 K for living rooms and bedrooms; slightly cooler 3000–3500 K beside a bathroom mirror.
